英語史の定番的説明として，法助動詞は屈折語尾の仮定法の衰退を埋め合わせるものとして発達したというものがある。この説明の帰結として，if節内で法助動詞が使われるという，PEの観点からすると意外な現象が示唆されるが，実際そのようである。15世紀，16世紀，17世紀を通して，if節で法助動詞が見られるとの調査報告である。
