PCとは主節の要素として具現するものの目的を表現する節のこと。上の例文で角括弧に囲われた部分がそれである。必ず１つ空所を含む。
Rationale clause
in order toで書き換えられる。空所は主語位置のみであり，主節の主語と同一指示である。
(8) Amy Lou took Mildred to the zoo e to feed the lions.
to feed the lionsはPCともRCとも解釈できる。PCと取れば，Mildredがライオンにえさをやったことになる。RCと取ればAmyが何かえさをやったことになる。
(9) Amy Lou took Mildred to the zoo in order to feed the lions.
(9)はえさをやったのがAmy Louであるとの解釈しかない。
(10) Mildred was thrown in the lion cage to keep her from talking.
(10)では，keepの主語は主節全体（いわゆるevent control）である。
(11) Elroy killed Oscar in order for Sylvia to escape.
RCはgapがなくてもよい。

c.What Helga does to protect herself is carry a hat pin.
RCは前置されたり，疑似分裂文の前提になれる。
