Collocationは単語間の親和性のこと。Firth (1957:194)によれば，「相互期待(mutual expectancy)」，「よく一緒にいる仲間(the company [that a word] keeps)」である。例えば，foreseeableはfutureと，foregoneはconclusionと共起する。これに対してcolligationとは語の生起する統語的環境の選り好みである。例えば，lapは[所有限定詞＋lap]という統語環境を好む。
